The PR Friendly Index

Once upon a time I was presenting my findings to a lot of important people, showing them which blogs they should follow.

Their immediate question was: “So, which one is most influential?” And I couldn’t answer them. It was a bit embarrassing.

So I made it my mission to find out how to determine blog influence. And that mission produced the PR Friendly Index. It took all the PR blogs I read and looked at a load of metrics to decide which was the most influential. It caused quite a stir and I kept it going for a good few months.

But, after a lot of dithering I decided to shelve it.

It was an interesting exercise in bean-counting but I think we’ve all moved on since. We now talk more about influence and change than about numbers; there are many more platforms and channels with which to express yourself, or which a brand can use, so they need to be taken into account too; and blogging seems to me to be declining in importance anyway.

Also it became apparent to me that a lot of the blogs on the PR Friendly Index were talking about social media rather than PR now. That in itself is fascinating, and I wonder how this will change over the coming year.

You can see past versions of the PR Friendly index in previous posts including the PR Friendly Index that caused the biggest stir in August 2008 but, if you want a good, regularly updated, reliable listof blogs and bloggers in advertising, marketing and media, go to Todd Andrlik’s Power 150.  He’s the one who started this all anyway, so it’s fitting that it all should come back to him.

Meanwhile, it means I know what is influence, and what is not, and I have the means to separate one from the other. So, If you’re interested, get in touch. If not, but you like what you’ve read, subscribe! And if none of that tickles your fancy, then happy surfing…

Two things: how much time do you have on your hands!! ;) and secondly… how did you select your list of blogs… any reason I’m not in there (or am I that poorly ranked??)

Hey, sorry, I only just noticed your post here! Apologies for not responding earlier. The methodology is very simple – it is actually based on my list that I built up over several months through a combination of my favourite bloggers, recommendations, serendipitous stumblings and blogs uncovered through searches. I’ve always been explicit and upfront about this. I don’t claim it to be 100% comprehensive, nor could any list be.

I’ll flatter you by saying this is a great tool…(it was how I discovered your blog, via a link)…and then move onto suggesting you might consider my blog for inclusion?

I know it’ll scupper the ‘Top 100′ feel, but it’ll give me some incentive if I’m just outside the Top 100 to begin with!..;)

    Hi,

It doesn’t scupper the ‘top 100′ feel at all.

If you register higher than others in the current 100, then you’re in. Simple as that. I’d also recommend that you give the Power150 a shot.

Is it worth to continue submitting your blog to indexes or directories? Once a blog achieves a certain PR (for example PR3 like my blog), that’s a question worth asking.
On the one hand, you want inbound links in order to increase your blogs ranking in the “eyes” of google. On the other hand, most of these blog directories or blog indexes, request that you link back to them in exchange for submitting. This can be tricky, especially if your posts appear on the homepage like on this blogspot blog.
You may end up linking to them from a PR3 webpage while they link back to your blog from a PR0 webpage. So, probably the best next steps to to try to improve your google PR without buying links, are:

    1. Find blog directories that will link to you from PR3 or more webpages. That way you won’t end up exchanging links with a low PR indexes.
    2. Get inbound links without having to link back. This can be done by posting comments on high PR pages.
    3. Be active in forums.
    4. Post blogs on RSS feeds.

    Brendan,
I love your blog and the list is very helpful – I just shipped it to a former colleague who wanted to get immersed in PR blogs. Thanks for having me on the list, but one question. You have me listed in single digits for Technorati authority but on the site I’m in the 400s and have even been listed in the 600s in recent days on another part of their site. Which number should I consider the “authority” number?
    Cheers
    Bernie

  44. Brendan said, on November 11, 2009 at 3:51 pm

Could be one of several reasons:
    * You changed your URL maybe?
    * You acquired a lot of authority since March last year (when I last
    updated this)
    * I got it wrong

To be honest, the index became of a chore than a pleasure to update,
which is why I’ve stopped updating it. Actually, your comment might
just have spurred me on to remove it because I don’t think it helps
having something so out of date online any more.

I’m afraid not – as I said, I’ve shelved it.
